The Sacred Thread
Guided by years of shared retreat leadership, this offering reflects a rhythm shaped through time, practice, and lived experience. If Into Stillness explores how to arrive, The Sacred Thread turns toward what holds us once we do.
In yogic tradition, a sūtra is a thread—something that binds teachings together not by force, but by continuity. The sacred thread symbolizes connection over time: between breath and body, practice and daily life, devotion and discernment, self and community.
This retreat explores the ties that bind us—not as obligations, but as living relationships. What truly holds us together? What allows continuity without constriction? How do we remain connected without tightening, overgiving, or disappearing?
These questions are not answered intellectually. They are explored through lived moments, shared rhythm, ritual, and practice—so connection is not merely understood, but felt, steadied, and carried forward.
Living the Sacred Thread
The Sacred Thread is not a concept we talk about—it’s something you experience through the rhythm of each day. The retreat is structured to support continuity between inner and outer practice, so what happens on the mat naturally carries into meals, rest, conversation, time in nature, and movement through the world.
Each day follows a spacious, intentional rhythm designed to support steadiness rather than stimulation. Practices are breath-led, grounded, and accessible, allowing participants to move, rest, and engage without pressure.
At the heart of this rhythm are the threads we return to again and again:
- the thread between breath and movement
- the thread between discipline and kindness
- the thread between stillness and daily life
- the thread that brings us back—to practice, place, and community
Daily rhythm includes:
- Intentional silent mornings
- Meditation and breath-led yoga (morning and evening)
- Nourishing meals prepared by a local chef
- Surf sessions as embodied practice
- Rest, reflection, and free time that invite connection without demand
Signature excursions
Signature excursions are offered throughout the week as part of the retreat rhythm. They are thoughtfully woven into the schedule to support connection to place, culture, and community—without disrupting the steadiness of daily practice.
These experiences are offered as invitations, not requirements. Participants are welcome to join, rest, or opt out based on what best supports their nervous system and energy that day.
Surfing is our signature excursion. Participants are guided by Alan and his team from one of Costa Rica’s most respected surf schools, The Surfer Factory. Instruction is supportive, professional, and accessible to beginners and experienced surfers alike. Time in the ocean becomes another form of practice—meeting fear, effort, play, and presence in real time. Photos and videos are available so you can witness yourself in motion, not just remember it.
Additional signature offerings may include:
- A visit to Manuel Antonio National Park
- The Royal Butterflies sanctuary experience
- A day excursion to Isla Tortuga
- A guided waterfall hike and swim
- Outdoor therapeutic massage — deep tissue bodywork with skilled local therapists, offered on-site
Each offering is paced intentionally and held within the same principles that guide the retreat as a whole: choice, presence, and respect for individual rhythm.
Who this retreat is for
At its core, this retreat is for people who are ready to slow down—and want to be guided by teachers who know how to do that skillfully.
What we are especially good at is helping people settle their nervous system. We teach intentional, breath-led movement on and off the mat, translating ancient yogic practices into forms that make sense in modern life. The emphasis is not on performance or pushing, but on awareness, pacing, and choice.
Between us, we bring nearly three decades of teaching experience and close to 10,000 hours of combined instruction. This will be our eighth Costa Rica retreat co-led together, and the container we offer is steady, well-tested, and thoughtfully held.
This retreat may be for you if:
- You’re seeking rest and restoration without needing to be “good at yoga” or push your body
- You’re curious about deepening your relationship to movement and breath in a way that is safe, effective, and adaptable
- You’re drawn to yoga as a living practice, grounded in classical teachings such as the Bhagavad Gītā, and interested in how those teachings apply to real, everyday life
- You’re a teacher, caregiver, or professional who gives a lot—and you’re ready for a space where nothing is required of you
- You want to travel thoughtfully and experience Costa Rica in a grounded, supported way, held within a well-paced retreat rhythm
- You’re new to yoga and want a welcoming, non-intimidating entry point
- Or you’ve practiced for years and are interested in refining, clarifying, and softening your approach
